Most mathematicians
study mathematics because they find it a beautiful
subject.
Listen to Poincare, one of the greatest mathematicians
of the 20th century describe his addiction to
the beauty in his subject…"The scientist
does not study Nature because it is useful; he
studies it because he delights in it, and he delights
in it because it is beautiful. If Nature were
not beautiful, it would not be worth knowing,
and if Nature were not worth knowing, life would
not be worth living."
Despite most mathematicians’ obsession
with the beauty of their subject, mathematics
still remains the best language to negotiate the
complexities of the real world. In particular,
mathematics is behind many of the technical innovations
we take for granted in our high-tech world.
In this section we shall explore how even the
primes have become essential tools in building
the electronic super-highway. |
